Linguistics major essay

In general sense, the concept of animal communication refers to the transfer of information by an animal which stimulates significant change in the behavioural pattern of the recipient of the information.  According to Hauser et al. (2014), several scholars are of the opinion that an existence of communal distinctiveness in the human language as well as animal communication is important to extensive study taken in last two decades, on humans, apes, rodents as well as birds amongst other non-human species. The fundamental aim of these studies is to understand which of the components of language faculty happens to be exclusively human and which are aligned to the domain-general communication mechanisms or served non-linguistic communication functions (Dingemanse et al., 2015). In addition to this, the study shed light on the area that which language interrelated capacities have been innate by humans from different precursor systems that have already been present in ancestral species.

  1. How are the terms ‘academic integrity’ and ‘plagiarism’ related? Give at least one example of how to identify information that has academic integrity.

Academic integrity refers to doing the right thing when completing assessment tasks, this can be achieved by using correct citation, avoiding plagiarism and following the correct procedures provided by the university. Engaging in academic integrity allows students to gain insightful knowledge and enhance their learning by demonstrating correct procedures according to Macquarie University citation guidelines. However,  if a student fails to implement academic integrity by displaying dishonesty when conducting assessment tasks such as copying another student’s work, or copying and pasting information directly from google and not providing citations, alludes to the concept of dishonestly as they have not acknowledged the work of others. This is labelled as plagiarism, meaning the student has displayed dishonesty, this has a strong impact on ones learning, furthermore the student is penalised for this behaviour and may result in suspension of a course, and exclusion.

2. We have looked at ‘critical reading’ this week. What steps do you plan to take when reading information for your assignments?

Critical reading refers to a more detailed and complex procedures when reading information whether it be newspaper articles or assessment tasks, this includes determining the position or opinion of the text using critical thinking skills. In preparation for assignments, it is vital to analyse the task by determining what the task is asking for you to do, determine the audience, the purpose of the task, what type of sources are needed to prepare for this assignment whether it be primary or secondary. Once this has been done, carrying research and and skimming through found sources is an extremely useful tool to carry out, as this allows an individual to gain insightful knowledge on what type of information is required to submit an assignment. Another step which is extremely vital to consider is searching information regarding the sources an individual will use, this includes where the information is coming from? The author? The currency of the information? And the time period.
